It is a recipe of an old neighbor who lived across the street when we first moved to Idaho.<BR/><BR/><BR/>Picnic Cake<BR/><BR/>Mix in bowl and let cool.<BR/>1 cup dates (I have also used raisins)<BR/>1 tsp. baking soda<BR/>1 1/2 cups boiling water<BR/><BR/>Mix in together:<BR/>1 cup sugar<BR/>3/4 cup shortening<BR/>1/2 tsp. salt<BR/>2 eggs<BR/>1 tsp. vanilla<BR/><BR/>Add egg mixture to dates <BR/>add: <BR/>1 3/4 cup flour <BR/>1 tsp cinnamon<BR/><BR/>Put in 9X13 cake pan and cover with 1 cup brown sugar, 6 ounces package of chocolate chips and 1/2 nuts.
