Buttermilk

I have a 1/2 gallon of buttermilk which I used in the scrumptious Pioneer cake. What in the world do you use buttermilk for besides chocolate cake and pancakes? Any ideas?

  2. I was going to say the same thing. A great recipe for it is:

    1 tsp. light karo syrup
    3/4 c. buttermilk
    1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
    1 c. granulated sugar
    1 tsp. baking soda
    1/8 c. margarine

Blend all ingredients and boil for 5 minutes. Use a large kettle as it will foam with the bakings soda.

This is really good with French Toast. You could also make fried chicken I remember seeing fried chicken that uses buttermilk. Maybe check food network, I am sure it was probably Paula Deen.

  3. Sounds like everyone has the same idea. I made buttermilk syrup with my left over buttermilk from that delicious cake. We like the buttermilk syrup better than regular maple.

  4. My sister-in-law just posted a recipe yesterday for buttermilk pancakes. I think I'll make them for lunch in an hour or two, I can't wait until tommorrow morning to try them. She said her kids love them. I've never tried buttermilk syrup, but it sounds like everyone loves it!

    Buttermilk Pancakes with Buttermilk Syrup

    2 1/2 cups flour
    4 tsp baking powder
    1 tsp salt
    1 tsp soda
    2 eggs
    4 Tbs oil
    2 1/2 cups buttermilk

Combine dry ingredients then add eggs, oil, and milk

    Buttermilk Syrup

    1 cube real butter
    1 cup buttermilk
    2 cups white sugar

Melt butter, add buttermilk and sugar. Stir to dissolve. Bring to a boil, remove from heat add:

1 tsp soda (Make sure the pan is large, soda expands mixture)
    1 tsp vanilla
